Although
the City of Grain Valley addressed its long term water supply needs for
several years to come with the recently completed project, staff would like
to recommend prudence and encourage conservation. Our natural resources are
precious and we should do everything we can within reason to be good
stewards. The following are standard tips used in most areas of the nation
and apply here in the midwest as well:
1. Water your lawn only when
needed. If you step on the grass and it springs back when you lift your
foot, it does not need watering.
2. Water during the cool parts
of the day: morning being the best period of the day. Watering between
11:00AM and 6:00PM is hard on the grass and provides no benefit during the
hot months.
3. Don't water on windy days
because evaporation is much quicker
4. Set your lawn mower one
inch higher to reduce evaporation
5. Catch water in a bucket
when waiting for warm water to kick in and use for watering flowers, etc
6. Don't let water run while
brushing teeth and shaving
7. Don't leave water running
while rinsing dishes
8. Shorten your showers by one
to two minutes
9. Rain Barrels under
downspouts are an excellent way to collect water for flowers,
trees, shrubs, etc and can be obtained in decorative styles. Guidance can be
found online
10. Rain gardens are also an
excellent option for outside watering. Guidance can be found online
