Eligibility for Office

The City’s Municipal Code outlines the eligibility criteria for elected officials as well as the procedures for elections.

Mayor

Those interested in becoming a candidate for the position of Mayor must be at least 25 years of age, a citizen of the United States, and a resident living in the City for at least one year before his/her election. The current Mayoral term expires in April 2024.

Board of Aldermen

The Board of Aldermen is made up of two representatives from each Ward in the City. One Board of Aldermen position per Ward is open for election each year. Those interested in becoming a candidate for the position of Alderman must be at least 21 years of age, a citizen of the United States, and a resident living in the City for at least one year before his/her election. Additionally, interested parties should also be a resident of the Ward from which he or she is elected.

Running for Office

Those interested in running for office should work directly with the City Clerk’s office. The City Clerk will provide a packet of the below documents for your completion. In order to file for candidacy, several documents must be provided, including:

  • Notice of Candidacy
  • Declaration of Candidacy
  • Notice to Candidate: Personal Financial Disclosure (PFD) Statement
  • Financial Disclosure Statement for Political Subdivisions
  • Proof Of Identification
  • Voter Identification Card
  • Form 5120 Candidate’s Affidavit of Tax Payments
  • Affidavit of Qualification for Office
  • $5.00 Filing Fee

Voter Information

Residents of Jackson County can register to vote at Grain Valley City Hall anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Individuals may also register online, find information regarding upcoming ballot issues and identify polling places on the Jackson County Election Board's website.  

Valid identification and proof of residency are required for voter registration.
