Animal Control

The primary duties of the Animal Control Officer (ACO) are to provide quality service to the citizens, while dedicating themselves to improving the co-existence of animals and humans. The ACO is committed to:

  • Maintain the highest quality of services to the community
  • Relieve the pain and suffering of animals
  • Promote responsible pet ownership
  • Increase public awareness of animal issues
  • Cooperate with breed rescue/animal welfare organizations
  • Continue training and education for management and staff
On-Call After Hours

If you have an Animal Control Emergency after hours please call Jackson County Dispatch center at 816-795-1960 or 911. The following are examples of items that would be considered emergencies:

  • Confined stray with a life threatening injury
  • Animal posing an immediate threat to public safety
  • Animal that has bitten a person
Additional Information

All pets are required to have a Grain Valley Animal License and you can obtain one at the Police Department. You will need to provide a copy of the current rabies vaccination record. There varying costs for animal licenses and they are as follows:

  • All dogs and cats: $10.00 per dog or cat (limit 4)
  • Pot-Bellied Pig $100.00 (limit 1)
  • Primates $100.00 (limit 4)
  • Ferrets $100.00 (limit 4)

There is a total limit 4 domesticated animals per household. You cannot have 4 ferrets and 4 dogs etc. All Domesticated animals must be under the control of their owners at all times, either by leash, fence (electronic/physical) or other means. Failure to do so may result in the issuance of citations to the owner(s) for violation of city ordinances.

If you find a stray animal and are not able to reach the animal control officer, please print and complete the Stray Animal Release Form.  This form is also available in the City Hall lobby.  The completed form is required prior  to turning the animal over to the City’s contracted kennel – Oak Grove Animal Hospital – if the animal control officer is unavailable or it is after office hours.
