The following is questions we frequently hear from the citizens and
contractors.
Q: Do I need a building permit for a deck?
A:
Yes, if the deck is thirty (30) inches above the ground or has a roof.
Q: Do I need a permit for a detached building?
A:
If it is two hundred (200) square feet or less you do not need a permit, but
still must maintain the required set-backs from the property lines.
Q: How big of a detached building can I build and where can I
build it?
A:
It can be up to one thousand (1000) square feet and must be five (5) feet
from the side and rear property lines. In addition, it may not be located in
front of your house.
Q: Do I need a building permit for a swimming pool?
A:
Yes, if it is an in-ground pool or an above ground pool holding a capacity
of more than five thousand (5000) gallons of water.
Q: Can I work on my own house or must I hire a licensed
electrician, plumber, etc?
A:
If you live in and own the house you are doing work on, you may obtain a
permit for that work. Rental property and commercial property requires a
licensed craftsman do the work.
Q: What work do I need a permit for?
A:
Any remodeling, additions, rewiring, electrical, service upgrades, and
plumbing repairs past the trap on any fixture.
Q: How many layers of roofing can I put on my house without
tearing some off?
A:
Building code allows up to three layers.
